Redstone.fm
returned to the air with two broadcasts during 2006. The first was
between the 9th January and
5th February. This broadcast featured a number of new students plus
some familiar voices from the first broadcast. Terry Turner
again presented the Breakfast Show. There were two speech based
programmes, The Morning Magazine (9am - 12 noon) presented by
Anne-Marie Evans and the Afternoon Magazine (2 - 4pm) with Carol
Stoby. Each featured at least two interviews each day. The subject
areas that were covered included local politics, welfare, local
charities & voluntary organisations, health & fitness, local
business and education. Guests interviewed included:
The broadcast
involved 23 volunteers on a regular basis. This included the five
current radio students (who worked for the station as a work
placement), a number of former students and others involved with
local broadcasting in the area. The radio students benefited in a
number of ways. They were more confident, particularly those who were
involved with the July 2005 broadcast.
What the
Radio Students said:
Carol Stoby
produced and presented a daily magazine show. This was broadcast
every weekday afternoon and included at least two guests on each
show. Carol was responsible for setting up her interviews. This was
Carol's first experience of live broadcasting.

Carol
commented on what she felt she enjoyed about the experience:
"Interviewing
the guests on my show. Developing my interview skills. I enjoyed the
planning and preparation."

Lucy Greaves
was initially involved with news gathering before taking over the
'drive-time' show. She had limited experience on hospital radio in
her hometown of Grantham and this was her first opportunity to
broadcast to a wider audience.
Before the
start of the broadcast, she worked with Carol Stoby and Anne-Marie
Evans in organising guests and researching for interviews.

Lucy commented:
"I
feel I gained a lot of experience and learnt a lot about what it
takes to produce and present a radio show.
"As
each show went by I did start to feel more and more confident.
I remembered what Kate Lee (the voice coach) had said about how I
could improve my voice. Presenting the Drive Time drive time was a
big step for me and I wasn't sure I would be able to cope with such a
big task. However, I feel I gave it me all and was pleased with
the outcome.
"Before
the broadcast I didn't believe I had what it takes to be a radio
presenter, but now I've completed the RSL I have so much more
confidence and can't wait to get back behind the mic." |

This second
broadcast was designed to build on the success of the first.
In the run up
to the start, we developed relationships with both local newspapers
who gave us good publicity, particularly in the first week on air.
Posters were
distributed around Redhill with a specific promotion in some local
pubs. This involved displaying posters and distributing drip mats
(inviting readers to return with a song request and a chance to be
entered into a draw).
Students and
other volunteers also distributed leaflets in Redhill town centre
during the first ten days on air. |

On the second
Saturday we were on air, we had a display stand in the Belfry
Shopping Centre (the space donated to us by the centre
management). Most students and volunteers were involved with
staffing the stand. Shoppers who stopped to talk to us had heard of
the station and were aware it was coming from and involved the RNIB
Redhill College. When questioned, this awareness was either from the
newspaper articles or from leaflets they had been given the previous week.
Amongst the
programmes broadcast, Carl Leaburn again presented a sport show. This
time it moved to a Friday afternoon and pre-viewed the coming
weekend's activities. Amongst Carl's guests were:
A number of
interviews were broadcast with singers and bands. Presenter Tess
Lewsey presented the Late Show and featured interviews with Steve
Alexander (Street Furniture), Anthony James (Mr Anchovy) and Nigel
Harding (Catch 22).
Petula Rose's
Reggae Show featured Shiikane, Jimi Simpson and Barrington Levene
whilst David Ridgway's Folk Show included singers Julie Felix, Julie
Fitzgibbon and Martin Carthy.

October
2006 Broadcast.
The second
broadcast in 2006 was during October (7th to 27th). A further group
of students had joined the course and took part is many of the
weekday programmes.
Gavin Lake
looked after the Breakfast Show, Johny Cassidy - the Mid Morning
Show, Dan Rogers made his broadcasting debut on the afternoon 'Drive'
and Lee Elliott, the Late Night Show.
Former
students from the previous broadcasts also took part. Amongst the
local volunteers who helped out, Nigel Gray, known for his work at
Radio Redhill, joined the team.

Johny's Story.
The morning
show was presented by student Johny Cassidy. After he left the course
he continued his involvement with Redstone FM, gaining valuable
on-air experience before gaining employment with BBC News at the TV
Centre in White City. He says,
"I've
got a six month contract as a Broadcast Journalist with the BBC
Business Unit at Television Centre in White City. I'll be
working across television, radio and on-line, researching and putting
together stories and features relevant to their business remit.
It's going to be a full on post, and I guess a lot of doors will open
for me. This comes after graduating from Highbury College in
Portsmouth at the start of this year with a BJTC accredited Post
Graduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism.
"I'm
really thankful for the opportunity and experience afforded to me by
Redstone FM. I wouldn't have had the breadth of knowledge to
progress in journalism if it hadn't been for that."

former student RNIB Redhill College writing in September 2008. |
